FESTIVAL
About the Festival
For over 15 years, the Massimadi Foundation has been promoting and supporting artistic projects from Afro LGBTQ+ communities through our annual arts and film festival, creating an inclusive space for diverse artistic cultures.
By showcasing emerging and established talent, we play a vital role in promoting and recognizing queer Afro artists in Montreal. Our activities foster connections between our communities and predominant artistic cultures.
Why was it created?
Breaking Invisibility
At a time when Afroqueer communities were absent from mainstream cultural spaces, the festival emerged to create a space of visibility and pride. It offers filmmakers, artists, and participants the opportunity to express themselves freely and showcase the richness of an often-ignored culture.
Celebrating Afro queer Identity
The festival is a space celebrating heritage, diversity, and creativity. It showcases films and artistic projects that explore themes related to sexual orientation, gender identities, and the specific challenges faced by visible minorities.
Create dialogue and foster social transformation
More than just a screening event, the Massimadi Festival is designed as a true think tank. The debates, meetings, and workshops that accompany it allow the community to engage around issues of inclusion, recognition, and empowerment.
