experimental documentary

My Gender Is Black explores how Black masculinity, sexuality, and gender are produced, controlled, punished, embellished, feminized, sanctified, athleticized, seated, endowed, watched, and performed through objects, institutions, speech, silence, music, posture, and the body.

Director's Note: My Gender Is Black rejects the idea that Blackness can be dissociated from gender, that gender can be understood independently of history, or that the body can be interpreted outside of the forces that have shaped it. It asks what it means to be truly seen in a world that often views Black male bodies through a distorted lens.

ARTISTIC PERFORMANCES

At the heart of this opening night, guest artists take over the space to make bodies, voices and stories resonate through dance, music, spoken word and performances.
